Do I need domain privacy protection? Newbies in the web hosting industry frequently ask this question. The answer to this question can be found here.

In today’s world, it is hard to keep your personal information private. With the internet and social media, everything you do can be watched by anybody with an interest in knowing about you.

You can read Domain Vs Web hosting.

But there are ways to make sure that your online life stays under wraps, and one of those ways is domain privacy.

Domain privacy prevents people from seeing who has registered a website or domain name because the registration information will only show up as “private.”

The downside of this is that if someone wants to contact you through email they won’t know where to send it until they request more info on your site. But for some people, this might just be enough peace of mind.

If you want to make sure your website’s registration is private, there are a couple of different ways of doing this.

Unfortunately, most paid services will offer you a different package depending on what you want to be private.

For example, if you just want the contact information to be kept private, you will be required to pay a smaller fee than if you want your domain name itself to be private.

Do I need a domain privacy service?

Using a service that offers domain privacy using it in love with website hosting (Hover or Bluehost, or Namecheap for example). Most of the hosting company offers domain privacy service for free with their hosting plan. Meaning you never have to pay for this.

This fee is paid directly to the domain privacy company that you have, in order to keep your info private.

Some people are okay with this. They see the advantage of keeping the domain name itself private, but they know that if somebody wants to get a hold of them, they can always request more information.

But this isn’t for everybody. In some cases, the fee is a bit too much for the person.

The fact that you have to pay money in order to keep your domain name private is a turn-off for some people.

For other people, the website hosting company is enough to make them feel safe. If someone wants to get in touch with you, the website hosting company needs to give your info (for some services) and there is no need to pay extra money for this.

For some people, domain privacy can be a life-saver. For others, it’s not worth the extra money and hassle.

It is definitely something to consider if you’re wondering how much work it will take to keep your domain name registration info private.

At the end of the day, it is up to you whether or not you want to pay for this service. And, in the end, the choice is yours.

Which domain privacy service is good?

It always depends on what you need to keep your domain name registration private. But if you want the whole domain to be kept private (the contact information and the actual domain name), you will have to pay more.

If it is just the contact information that you want to be hidden, you can use a free service like the one offered by Bluehost or NameCheap.

Benefits of Whois Protection or Domain Privacy

(1) Protect your personal information:

Protect your personal information with the Whois Protection service. When you register a domain name, you need to provide some personal information such as your full name, address, email, phone, etc.

If you do not register whois protection for your domain name then this information is available to anyone who performs a “whois” search on your domain.

If someone performs a “whois” search on the personal information you have provided, they can find out your name, address, email, etc.

If you register the Whois Protection service for your domain name then this information will be hidden from “whois” searches.

Using the Whois Protection service not only hides your personal information from public view, but it also hides all details of your domain name.

(2) Minimize spam:

Using the Whois Privacy service to hide your personal information from “whois” searches will minimize spam you receive as spammers cannot validate their email addresses.

(3) Avoid denial-of-service lawsuits:

Avoid being named in a lawsuit by having your personal information hidden from public view by using the Whois Protection service.

(4) Prevent unsolicited marketing outreach:

Unsolicited marketing companies and organizations use “whois” information to contact domain name owners.

Having your personal information hidden through the Whois Protection service will prevent this.

(5) Greater control of your personal information:

You are in control of who can transfer your domain name to another registrar. If you choose to place the Whois Protection service on your domain name, you can control who is allowed to transfer your domain name.

Is domain privacy protection worth it?

It depends on the kind of website you have. If you have a personal blog or a small business website, it is not really worth it.

But if you are running a large company, it is definitely worth the money. If you are still not sure, I would recommend that you try out the free offer first.

Also, I think privacy protection is not worth it if you are trying to protect your information from potential hackers only, because that is not possible to hack anyone just using the contact information for one site.

So finally I think that domain privacy protection is worth it because it might be useful for you in the long run if your site becomes more important.
